I just signed this painting and I'm very happy with how it turned out. I put a ton of work into it and it really paid off. I'm going away this weekend and will start planning a new painting for when I return.

I had such a great journey with this painting and I'm a little sad that it's over. This painting really went smoothly and didn't hit any roadblocks. I was excited to work on it every day when I woke up. I'm going to sign it tomorrow and then let it dry before I varnish it. I wanted to share another insight that I had regarding technique. Last night, I was thinking about the importance of oiling out. For those who don't know, oiling out means covering the canvas with pure oil so that the dry colors come back to life. So last night I was thinking about whether or not oiling out is important. I went back and forth about the merits of it versus the necessity of it. I realized that the only way to solve this problem is to try it out and see what happens. It doesn't do any good to overthink a problem while you're not working. I see a lot of painters spend way too much time contemplating technique, which brush to use, which canvas to use, etc. The thing is that you won't figure out what works by not working. Let action do your thinking for you. The only technique that matters, is action. Day 5 on this painting and I'm nearing the finish line. It's coming together really nicely and I'm really enjoying the process of working on it. I spent a lot of time today trying to capture the light and shadow on the dog itself. I've also worked really hard on the landscape behind the dog. For me, the background is just as important as the figure itself.
I put a lot of work into this painting today. It will take a couple more sessions to complete before I sign it. I'm really proud of it and I think it's a great example of my current skills as an academic painter!
