I'm really focusing on developing my own style with these. It's good practice every week and I've been really enjoying them.
I'm realizing more and more each day that finding your own style as an artist must come naturally. You can't force it to happen. It happens when you sincerely are trying to translate a message from your mind to the paper. It must be your own message, not someone else's.

Today, my girlfriend and I got some polaroid cameras and printed out some photos. I haven't printed out photos in years and I have to say that I love it. The photos also have a much more precious quality to them because they're small and you can't take as many as you want. I also got a small photo album to keep the photos in. I should have gotten one during college because all the photos I have from college are on some computer somewhere, not being appreciated.
The whole experience reminds me of when I sat for a tintype portrait with my friend Charlie. It was a special event to have that photograph taken and I want my future photos to be special also. Our family has an old album that used to belong to my grandfather. The album has all these small black and white photos of all sorts of travels, including when he first came to New York from Holland. There's a small picture of him and his father in front of the statue of liberty. I want to be able to look back at actual photos and share those memories with my kids one day. This is also why I keep a diary.. A continuing illustration every week to test my imagination. My girlfriend helped me paint this one.
I love this. A great explanation of how Miyazaki imagines his creative worlds. There's also a great explanation of why storyboarding is essential to visual storytelling.
