I pulled out an old sample of an oil primed canvas that I had primed over a year ago. It used to be fun experimenting with different kinds of hand-prime and the surface is unmatched. I've also been using Fredrix Single Primed (SP) oil ground, which is also good stuff, but no where near as good as the ground I made myself. The other advantage to making my own ground is that I can color it any way that I like; the Fredrix is also toned a light gray which is nice.
I'm going to let this study dry and work more on it tomorrow. I'll probably go back to priming all of my own canvas with rabbit skin glue + Gamblin ground simply because the surface is beautiful. And it's also much more cost effective.

I'd been waiting to read this one for a while and I found it at the library today. I'm a big Murakami fan, but I have to suggest this one to anyone who hasn't read him before. It's really short (96 pgs); I'm not a fast reader but I read it in one sitting. The story is about a boy who's thrown into this strange library/prison chamber with a sheep boy and mysterious girl. It's extremely imaginative and very well written.
This is also the closest thing we may get to a graphic novel by Murakami. It has some very modern photo-artistic illustrations that match the story beautifully. The writing is very classical and contrasts nicely with the art direction. It's available on Amazon for pretty cheap, but I'm always a fan of the library since it gives me a time frame to read the book. Check this one out if you're into Murakami's dream-like aesthetic. |
