-Oil Primed Canvas-
After looking for a suitable surface and tone for work, I have decided to the prepare large rolls of my own oil primed canvas. The color is a warm gray, prepared with Mars Brown and Ivory Black . The two coats of ground are applied with large palette knife by hand. I love the craft of oil painting as much as painting myself and there's no better surface than oil primed canvas.
The more I study works that I really love, the more I realize that beauty is created in the darks and halftones. Great works of art do not rely on blown out highlights, but rather they find subtlety in half-tones. It's also difficult to come to the realization that it takes many veils and successive passes of color and paint to build up a surface to the point of detail. Small steps toward an end goal aren't always the easiest to follow, but they are the most important.
-Sketching and its Importance-
In spare moments, I couldn't be happier than to have a sketchbook in my hand. It's a good way to keep the hand and eye moving during downtime from other works.
