I love painting in the garage, but with the cold weather it's been an icebox in there. Until the weather turns, I'm working with the next best thing: charcoal drawings.
I draw a lot with graphite and white charcoal, but I recently finished a study of a Dalmatian with black and white charcoal. It turned out well even though I haven't worked with charcoal darks in a while.
Charcoal is really very similar to painting because you need to think broadly. There's only a certain level of detail that you can attain with the charcoal. I think some artists prefer to draw over painting or vice versa, but painting always came more naturally. The principles are the same no matter what you do, but I'm eager for Spring so I can get back to painting.
