I love showing my process so I decided to do add some step-by-step pictures to this week's calendar sketch. I start out with a pencil sketch after I find a quote that I want to illustrate. Then, I ink over the pencil sketch with waterproof ink. For color, I add watercolor in large areas followed by shadows for definition. I'm always careful not to overwork the watercolor because it's best to leave some spontaneity in it.
My whole process is very straight forward, but I always make sure to start with a clear idea in mind before I draw. If I start drawing without an idea in mind, then my drawing will look sloppy. After I have my idea, I let my mind wander and think about more details to add or expressions to change.
